Myanmar Tactical: Protests against military regime ongoing in multiple areas as of morning hours (local time) on April 9; avoid all travel

Please be advised:

  • Multiple anti-coup demonstrations are ongoing across the country during the morning hours (local time) on April 9.
  •  A large-scale strike led by the Engineering Group, Mya Taung Group, and Yadanabon University students is currently underway in Mandalay. Military personnel are reportedly raiding the Myayeenandar Housing complex in the city and destroying protesters’ barricades located near 44th Street in Chanmyathazi Township.
  • In Yangon, anti-coup and anti-China protests are ongoing in Hlaing Township and Thanlyin Township. Emerging reports indicate that at least three individuals were abducted by security officials in Tamwe Township during the morning hours.
  • At least four people were killed and 30 injured after the military cracked down on anti-coup demonstrators in Bago Region during the early morning hours on April 9. Reports indicate that protesters were allegedly shot using heavy weaponry, including rocket-propelled grenades (RPG) and live ammunition.

Recommendations:

  1. Avoid all travel to Myanmar over the coming days due to the extreme risk of civil unrest and political instability.
  2. Those currently residing in Myanmar are advised to evacuate at the earliest possible convenience and remain updated on potential port and border closures.
  3. Those who are unable to evacuate are advised to stock up on adequate supplies of food, water, medicine, and any other essential goods for at least a week, and remain ready to evacuate the country, given the growing threat of violent civil unrest.
  4. Avoid all government buildings and protests due to the risks of violence by both anti-government protesters and security forces.
  5. Take necessary precautions, including ensuring that you have access to a prepaid Wi-Fi hub, mobile hotspot, or alternate internet system, due to anticipated disruptions.
